Next up on my Spring Break posts is what do when you have only one day in Charleston, South Carolina! This was the last day of my spring break trip and admittedly, my friends and I were pretty tired at this point and it was becoming clear that the coronavirus was going to be a big deal so we were a bit pre-occupied with that. None the less, we did some exploring, which mostly consisted of eating if I’m being honest, but had a lovely day in Charleston!
Rainbow Row
Just like the way I started my Savannah post (which you can read here), I’m starting with the most obvious can’t-miss attraction–Rainbow Row! Located on East Bay Street, these 13 row houses are the longest cluster of Georgian row homes in the United States. As soon as we got to the street, it was pretty clear that it was a photo hotspot–groups of girls lined the colorful homes posing to take the perfect shot for the ‘gram. But I joined in and was one of them because they’re just such pretty backdrops! We parked in a nearby parking garage and were just a short 3 minute walk from the row homes, as well as the famous pineapple fountain.
Pineapple Fountain
The Pineapple Fountain is another iconic landmark in Charleston, located in the Waterfront Park. This wasn’t on my agenda but one of my friends suggested it and it was honestly one of the best parts of our day. It was in the mid to high 60s when we were visiting which was warm enough for us to take our shoes off and join in the fun walking around the fountain. We took many laps around the large pineapple, as well as many selfies, and just had some good old fashioned fun! It might be “just” a fountain, but it’s so whimsical and charming that I definitely suggest checking it out.

Callie’s Hot Little Biscuit
We spent one afternoon, night, and morning in Charleston and our lunch of choice was Callie’s Hot Little Biscuit for some traditional Southern biscuits. They were delicious! My friends all got biscuit sandwiches (egg, bacon, and cheese, for example) but I tried the 3-pack. I got a buttermilk, shortbread, and bacon biscuit and chose apricot jam, cheddar cheese, and strawberry jam for my toppings. They were all very satisfying! I was worried it wouldn’t be enough since I also hadn’t had breakfast that day, but it was very filling and I’m thinking about ordering some to be delivered to my home! There isn’t any seating inside on the King Street location, but there was standing room at a counter. If you can find a place to eat outside, I would suggest that because my group got split up and it was a bit of a bummer to not be able to share the experience together.

Jeni’s Splendid Ice Cream
Jeni’s Splendid Ice Cream was really the only thing on my list of things I wanted to check out while we were in Charleston. One of my colleagues got some pints of Jeni’s ice cream shipped to her for her birthday (Hi Mallory, if you’re reading this!) and I looked it up out of curiosity and was delighted to see that there was a location in Charleston. Now, I’m a bit of an ice cream fanatic. I can eat ice cream any time of day, during any season or temperature, with really no limits. I love ice cream, I have high expectations. Well, Jeni–you did not disappoint! I got the trio which is 3 half scoops (although they seemed like full scoops to me) and I tried the Gooey Butter Cake, Roasted Peanut Butter and Strawberry Jam, and Salted Peanut Butter with Chocolate Flecks. They were all yummy but the peanut butter and strawberry jam was by far my favorite! I’ve only ever found that flavor at the ice cream shop in my college’s town and it breaks my heart to say this but, Jeni’s beats them out! I might even order some pints to relive the deliciousness at home.
That pretty much sums up my time in Charleston! Like I said, we were tired and just wanted some downtime so we took it pretty easy. We did have a late dinner at Uptown Social (also on King Street) which was pretty good. I had a frozen slushy John Daly which was excellent, as well as loaded fries. The portions were pretty large but the whole group gave the food positive reviews! It was 21+ only when we got there (around 7 pm for happy hour) so just keep that in mind if you have any underage people. But if you aren’t into bars, I wouldn’t worry, it seemed like a typical restaurant/bar to me!
