My spring break was last week and my friends and I went South! This blog post is dedicated to one of our destinations– Savannah, Georgia. Truthfully, I wasn’t particularly looking forward to Savannah of all the places we were going, but it ended up being my favorite–by far. I was so, so enamored with the architecture, the flora and the fauna, the sounds, the smells…literally everything about this little city. I even called my parents and said I could see myself moving there after I get my Masters! So here are some of my suggestions and favorite things to do, see, eat, and drink in Savannah that also make some of the best picture spots in Savannah.
Forsyth Park
It would be nearly impossible to come across a blog post about Savannah and not read about Forsyth Park on it, so I’m just going to start there. On the particular day I visited, there was a wedding going on at the fountain and it was so romantic and picturesque. The fountain’s water was dyed green in preparation for St. Patrick’s Day which was a festive touch. And even better, there were tons of dogs everywhere and we got to meet so many of them! It was truly magical.
Pro Tip–Street parking is free on Sundays! We were able to park right on the street for the entire day for free!
Visit the Squares
Savannah is home to over 20 beautiful squares that are original to the city. On one of the days, I needed a break from my friends (who are wonderful, but I’m not used to being with 6 people 24/7) so I took a stroll through the squares with one of my friends (P.S.–Thanks Kelly, for taking my picture whenever I asked!). They’re just beautiful and such lovely places to stop and relax. I also think they make beautiful proposal spots, hint hint to my future boyfriend/fiance :). One of the squares I wandered into had a man playing jazz on a saxophone with a plein air painter and a horse drawn carriage going by, and it was absolutely breathtaking.
Pounce Cat Cafe
Initially, I wasn’t going to join my friends when they went to Pounce Cat Cafe but then I walked there with them and I couldn’t just turn around while they got to enjoy it! Pounce Cat Cafe is pretty much exactly what it sounds like–you can choose either a 30 or 60 minute session where you go in and enjoy the company of cats. The best part is that they’re all adoptable! If you choose the 60 minute option, it includes a drink. I got hot chocolate but they also had coffee, tea, red and white wines, mimosas, and beer. There were other people in the cafe while we were there and I did feel at times there were too many of us, but I think it was just the personalities of the other people, and not the actual number. I know cat cafes exist in other cities so it isn’t particularly unique to Savannah, but still–it was adorable.
Admire the Architecture
I know some people struggle with aimlessly walking around with no destination, and I think I’m typically that way, too. But there was just something about strolling around Savannah that I couldn’t help but want to just keep walking to admire the buildings and the architecture. Savannah is so unique in the sense that every building is unique and charming, yet it’s all cohesive. It isn’t a cookie cutter city at all, but it also doesn’t feel like a hodge podge of architecture. It’s truly a breathtaking city and I hope I get to back to explore more streets and more homes and buildings!
Honorable Mentions–Shopping & Museums
I did a lot of wonderful shopping in Savannah, but none of my friends are into that so while I was shopping, they went to a history museum and the Prohibition Museum and recommended both of them. Both places have admission fees, but at the end of the Prohibition Museum, you could get a drink and at the history museum, they were able to try on different historical hats and see the bench from Forrest Gump! I went to Vineyard Vines (and got really cute shirts specific to Savannah!), Spartina, Kendra Scott, The Parisian Market, and of course, Palm Avenue, a signature Lilly Pulitzer store. I spent way too much money at Palm Avenue, but I wanted to take advantage of trying on things rather than having to rely on ordering online and figuring out what is plus size friendly and what isn’t. I left with a popover, board shorts, and the new scalloped edge Luxletic skort. I also stopped in the Candy Kitchen on River Street and got massive peanut butter cups, and a Savannah 2020 sailboat ornament at Christmas on The River!
Savannah, you are truly one of my new favorite places. I cannot wait to visit again one day and explore even more of your beautiful offerings. I’ve heard that Savannah is called “Slow-vannah” and I definitely agree with that sentiment–everything seemed so peaceful and like I could finally breathe and relax for the first time all semester when I was walking around. Up next, I’ll share my favorite places to eat in Savannah, as well as posts for Hilton Head and Charleston, SC!
